Employees are the company’s most important resource, and motivated and engaged employees are the key to success.
But how do we create a work environment that allows employees to thrive and stay?
Wallmans is a company that thrives on its employees flourishing. Running an organization based on customer experiences is resource-intensive, and our employees are our most important asset.
Here are some tips based on our experiences:
Show Empathy: Remember that you are leading people, not robots. Showing empathy means understanding and considering the well-being of employees. By being attentive to their needs, you can create a positive work environment that promotes well-being and engagement. “Seeing your employees” may sound cliché, but it’s important.
Understand What Motivates Them: Take the time for frequent conversations with employees. Find out what motivates them, what they are passionate about, and what their career goals are. When you know your employees well, you can motivate and lead them in a more personal and effective manner.
Invest in Development: Most people want to learn and grow. Provide employees with opportunities to gain new knowledge relevant to their work. This will help them feel competent and engaged, and also better prepare them for future tasks. This doesn’t necessarily mean expensive courses, but even smaller ones can be valuable.
Empower Employees: Give employees responsibility and the opportunity to make decisions. Let them take ownership of tasks and show trust in their competence. Avoid micromanaging, as it can easily demotivate employees and lead to frustration.
Give Constructive Feedback: Even though you grant employees responsibility, it is important to provide constructive feedback. Ask how things are going, what they need help with, and give praise for a job well done. Be supportive and encouraging, and provide them with something to reflect on without being intrusive.
Be a Good Example: Be honest, innovative, and a good team player. Show that you take responsibility for the decisions you make, and be willing to help in challenging situations. Your actions set the standard for the rest of the team.
Recognize Efforts: Praise employees for their good results and efforts. Acknowledge their contributions to the company’s success, whether through simple words, emails, or even better – personal feedback. Give praise in public and address areas for improvement privately.
Involve Employees: Good leaders understand that leadership is not a one-way communication. Allow information, decisions, and allocations to flow both from top to bottom and bottom to top, so that employees' engagement and experiences can contribute to solving challenges in a more holistic way.
Be Transparent: Be open and honest in your communication. Inform employees about important decisions and changes that affect them. Avoid misunderstandings and build trust by being clear and honest in your communications.
Create a Sense of Belonging: Help all employees understand why their job is important to the company. Let them see how their contributions affect the company’s success. Also, arrange social events and award ceremonies to include everyone and provide a sense of community. At Wallmans, we have a dedicated party committee to help find activities for employees throughout the year.
Satisfied employees lead to a more productive and successful company!
